Cholesterol-Lowering Drugs

Cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood stream circulate as part of lipoprotein complexes. Those complexes can be classified as high (HDL), low (LDL) and very low (VLDL) density lipoproteins depending on their density upon centrifugation. Elevated level of total cholesterol and LDL in the clinical studies has been linked to heart problems. Many cholesterol-lowering drugs including pravastatin (Pravachor™), simvastatin (Zocor™), atorvastatin (Lipitor™) and rosuvastatin (Crestor™) target the HMG-CoA reductase enzyme, that controls the key step in the biosynthesis of cholesterol. The inhibition of the enzyme results in the lowering of the total cholesterol, LDL and triglycerides in patients.
