Antihypertension Drugs

More than 65 million Americans suffer from high blood pressure and that number is rising. The term, hypertension, is used to describe the condition of persistent high blood pressure. Angiotensin II, that produced by ACE enzyme, is the principle pressor agent in the rennin-angiotensin system, with effects ,including cardiac stimulation, stimulation of synthesis of aldosterone and renal absorption of sodium, that cause hypertension. Two general targets of the drugs are ACE enzyme and ATI receptor. The blockade of ACE enzyme will inhibit the biosynthesis of potent angiotensin II. Blockade of the ATI receptor inhibits the negative regulatory feed back of angiotensin II. Both are very effective for treatment of hypertension. Many drugs, including cardesartan (Atarcand™), irbesartan (Avapro™), losartan (Cozaar™) and olmesartan (Benicar™), contain an unique tetrazole group.
